A ‘Must Visit’ for Rennie Mackintosh fans

Charles Renee Mackintosh

If you are a fan of Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish architect, designer and artist, then a visit to the Hill House in Helensburgh is a must during your stay at Rhumhor on Loch Goil.

The Glasgow born Mackintosh is known around the world as one of the most creative figures of the 20th century.  His designs are seen in everything from buildings, to jewellery to clothes and even china.  One of his architectural highlights is the Glasgow School of Art, while on a hillside in Helensburgh in Argyll sits what is know as his finest domestic creation ‘The Hill House.’

The famous designer created not only the house itself but also most of the rooms, furniture and other fixtures.  This is an essential day out for anyone that loves the Mackintosh style and it is open to the public from April right through until the end of October.

The Waverley’s last visit to Loch Goil in 2015

The Waverley on Loch Goil

Today, the iconic paddle steamer The Waverley will pay her last visit of 2015 to Loch Goil.  The Waverley is the last sea-going paddle ship in the world and is always a beautiful and welcome sight on Loch Goil.  Throughout the summer months she visits Loch Goil once a week, steaming up Loch Long and usually turning around in front of Carrick Castle.

The last month and a half she has been on the south coast and the Thames offering pleasure cruises but this weekend she makes her final appearance in Scotland before laying up for the winter.

More information and booking details can be found on their website.

Celebrate World Animal Day – Book a Holiday with your Pet

Today, 4th October, World Animal Day is celebrated with the mission to ‘to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe’.

Here in the heart of Scotland’s first National Park, we are surrounded by wildlife. Welfare and conservation of Scotland’s iconic wild animals are of huge concern to the people that look after and manage the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Much effort goes into ensuring that Scotland’s wild animals are protected and flourish within the park boundaries.

Our fauna is one of the key reasons visitors are drawn to this beautiful part of Scotland and is among the incentives for people choosing to live and work in this area. Red squirrels, pine martens, deer, seals, otters, these are all among the animals that live alongside us and we are lucky enough to see on a regular basis.

Visitors also often bring their own animal companions when visiting the park, and this is a growing trend. We have found the number of people booking Rhumhor and bringing their dogs has grown year and on year and we are delighted to be able to offer our guests quality pet friendly accommodation in such an ideal location.  Bringing your pet does not mean you have to miss out on wildlife experiences.  If your dog has its sea legs it can accompany you onto the loch to see the local seal colony and more elusive animals such as red squirrels or pine martens may be seen as you walk or drive along the roads in the glen.  Deer can sometimes be spotted from the house, and more often on the tracks through the forestry commission areas of the Argyll Forest Park.

Rather than sending your dog off to kennels it is much nicer to be able to bring your dog on holiday with you, so you can all enjoy the beautiful walks, peace and tranquillity and amazing wildlife this area has to offer. Celebrate World Animal Day by booking your short break or holiday with your pet in an area renowned for its stunning scenery and wildlife.

Autumn breaks in the Loch Lomond National Park

September Rhumhor Holiday LodgeAutumn is such a beautiful time to visit the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. I noticed this weekend that the pink horse chestnut in the front garden at Rhumhor is just starting to show its autumn colours and soon that blush of colour will be spreading far and wide across the park. The Argyll Forest puts on its finest autumn hues, the bracken on the hills and mountains turns to rust and the loch seems to turn a steely grey as coils of soft silver mist drift along.

It always seems to be a good time to spot wildlife as it starts to prepare for winter. The stags roar across the mountains, the red squirrels are scampering around stocking up their food supplies and the seal colony here on Loch Goil seems to become more active with seals often popping up in front of the house at high tide.

Autumn Short Breaks on Loch Goil

Loch Goil and Rhumhor Holiday LodgeSummer is saying farewell and now you need a short break to look forward to before the hectic festive season begins.

Loch Goil is the perfect destination for a really relaxing short break, the chance to enjoy one of the few places where traffic noise means the odd car passing, and the sound of the waves on the loch and the birds are the background to your day. Still just over an hour from an international airport, this area is justifiably called the hidden jewel in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Loch Goil is stunning all year round and autumn brings its own set of colours. As the trees and the hills put on their autumn finery Loch Goil can change from being as calm and reflective as a mirror, to grey and moody as an autumn storm passes on through.

Whatever the weather, staying at Rhumhor means you have a large, comfortable and very beautiful house in which to enjoy the scenery. There are five comfortable bedrooms, a dining room looking over the loch and two lounges, one of those includes a large pool table, three sofas and two armchairs! Outside you have a decking area with picnic tables, plus your own lochside lawn and picnic table right next to the loch, ideal for those crisp autumn days when you want to enjoy some autumn sunshine. Take a look at our galleries of both the house and location and get in touch about booking that short break now.
