Treat yourself to real relaxation in 2013

As we tidy away the turkey and tinsel and enjoy the lull before the New Year celebrations start it is a great time to think about the kind of holiday you want in 2013.

And Relax

With life at such a fast pace it is hard to find somewhere where you can really relax. Away from the hum drum of work and the busy pace of town or city. Here at Rhumhor you’ll find exactly that. This is a place of peace and calm. Somewhere to enjoy stunning views and the sounds of nature while just a stone’s throw from activities galore.

The house is in the hamlet of Carrick Castle, near the pretty village of Lochgoilhead. It has the enviable position of being close to many activities but feeling like it is away from the world. Lochgoilhead has a leisure centre with pool, golf cours, and pitch and putt. There is also an outdoor activities centre, bike hire, boat hire, fishing tackle hire and wildlife canoe trips. It has great places to eat and drink and a real welcoming feel.

In Carrick Castle itself you can explore numerous trails along the loch or into the mountains. Investigate the history of the castle and enjoy spotting seals, an array of sea birds and maybe even a golden eagle.

Unwind

At the end of the day you can enjoy a meal out or cook a feast in the fully equipped self catering kitchen. Let the dishwasher do the work afterwards. Our unique family room was once the tennis pavilion. It is big enough to house a large pool table and comfy chesterfield sofas and chairs for all to sit on. For those that would like a little time to themselves, the large sofas in the drawing room will embrace you as you enjoy the flames in the log burner, or you can enjoy the reading area on the half landing.

Sleep well in our comfy beds, knowing that in the morning you will awake to stunning views of the Argyll countryside.

Rhumhor is the perfect large self catering holiday home to enjoy with family and friends in 2103. We look forward to welcoming you.

A Merry Christmas at Rhumhor Holiday Lodge

Family room at Christmas

Tomorrow our guests will arrive to enjoy the comfort, festive feel and stunning scenery of Rhumhor for the Christmas week.  Rhumhor is a house which really lends itself to the festive period, with its log burners, period style and the amazing family room where everyone can get together for their family celebrations.

We take great pride in decorating the public rooms at Rhumhor.  This year sees our new festive arch in the family room, a beautiful 8ft arch shaped tree, fully decorated and twinkling with fairy lights.  The drawing room has an art deco theme, in homage to the era which played such an important part in the way Rhumhor looks today.  The drawing room tree echos the style and colours of the room and is the perfect backdrop to a peaceful gathering in front of the wood burner.

The dining room plays a key role on Christmas day and is where you hold your Christmas feast overlooking the lochs and mountains.  Its oriole window houses its own Christmas tree and silver candle sticks adorn the tartan clad table.

Food is such an important part of Christmas and you’ll find some wonderful treats available locally.  Pop into the Loch Fyne Oyster Farm shop to buy local fish and shell fish, local meat and an array of treats and goodies.  At Inveraray visit the Loch Fyne Whisky shop and pick the perfect dram for festive cheer and don’t forget a visit to the Christmas shop and the deli.  If you love a good ale then we have an award winning brewery at Loch Fyne Ales, at their brewery tap you try the ales before you pick one to bring back.

If you’d like to eat out, try the Shore House Inn for excellent food with stunning views or the village local The Goil Inn, both in Lochgoilhead.   There are many other lovely pubs and restaurants within the area, just look at our section on dining on the website.

We are delighted that families enjoy a special Christmas at Rhumhor Holiday Lodge and we look forward to welcoming many more over the years.

Christmas at Rhumhor does book out quickly, so if you’d like to book for Christmas 2013 do get in touch.

A smart looking turret on this holiday home!

French Windows
Rhumhor Turret

Last week we completed an exciting new renovation project at Rhumhor, the installation of double glazing throughout, ensuring our guests are even cosier this winter.

Many of the original windows that were in the property when we purchased it were painted shut, damaged by lack of maintenance and, once we had freed them from the paint, still rather awkward to open. Many were still single glazed.

As part of our mission to continously improve our guest experience we have now have all windows in the lodge converted to double glazing, with beautiful new double glazed sash windows and georgian windows.

The bay in the family room now sports a fabulous new set of French doors and our iconic turrets have been reclad and are looking as fine as they day they were added to Rhumhor in the 1920’s. For all those princesses out there, it’s the ideal chance to sit in your turret and look down upon your prince!

It all adds up to making Rhumhor THE large holiday home in Argyll to enjoy with family and friends.

Guest Inspired Activities at Rhumhor Holiday Lodge

Whether our guests are here for a long weekend or a week we love to hear of the many different activites they’ve enjoyed during there stay.

Often our guests just kick back and enjoy the complete tranquillity here at Carrick Castle, but often they’ve made their stay extra special by planning some activites for all the family.  So what could you plan during your stay here?

Here are five suggestions inspired by our guests.

1) Come Dine With Me.

If you have a competitive nature why not split your party into pairs and plan a Come Dine with Me competition. As Rhumhor Holiday Lodge is a self catering property it has all the cooking and dining facilities you need to conjure up impressive meals with fantastic Argyll produce available locally. You could pick a specific theme per night with each pair creating a dining experience to match that theme. The dining room lends itself perfectly to a formal dinner party, and the dishwasher means no one will be stuck at the end of the evening doing the dishes. The options are endless and perhaps the winner could be treated to a meal at one of the lovely local restaurants.

2) Photography Workshop.

When you visit such a beautiful landscape it is only natural you’ll want to capture what you see, and this seems so much easier in the age of digital cameras. Wouldn’t it be great to learn how to spot the moment to take your photo and how to use the elements of landscape within your picture to best effect. Book a session with Loch Goil’s resident photographer and you will pick up all kinds of hints and tips on how to take better photographs, as well as having some mementos from the day on your camera.

3) Wildlife and scenery tip by canoe.

If you are itching to explore the loch and get up close to wildlife then treat yourselves to a trip out on Loch Goil’s voyageur canoes. The canoes will take up to 10 passengers and you will journey with an experienced steersman who will reveal beautiful locations along the loch. You can visit the local seals, spot a range of birdlife and perhaps see our visiting porpoises.

4) Cruise on the Loch.

What better way to celebrate a birthday or special occasion than a cruise on one of the most famous lochs in Scotland, Loch Lomond. You can start the cruise at Tarbet, a short drive from Rhumhor and park right by the departure point.  Combine history with the stunning scenery of north Loch Lomond by taking the Rob Roy Discovery cruise which explains the relationship between this famous loch and equally famous Scot. You can enjoy a special Rob Roy whisky coffee as you take in the glorious sights of the highlands.

5) Murder Mystery nights or weekend (for all ages!)

How about a night of intrigue and suspense during your stay at Rhumhor? Murder mystery kits can be purchased easily on the internet with complete instructions of how to set up for a day or days of mystery and excitement.   These kits are available to suit all ages so it is a chance for everyone to join in the fun.  Rhumhor really lends itself to this unusual activity with its quirky character, spacious rooms, tranquil location and masses of outdoor space.

The BEST weekend for all the family

If you are looking for a family break to cheer yourself up after school starts back how about visiting Argyll’s Best of the West Food, Drink and Music Festival. This family friendly festival is held annually in the grounds of the stunning Inveraray Castle and it is a two day celebration of food, drink and music showing just how fantastic Argyll is as a world-class dining, drinking and travel destination.

Tickets are great value, just £8 for the weekend if booked in advanced and children under 16 go free!

The arts and crafts section will house over 30 local artists and for the kids there will be activities such as climbing walls, pony rides and bungee trampolines.

It is of course the chance to try some of the wonderful food and drink from the area including produce from the famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Fyne Ales and Loch Fyne Whiskies. There will be plenty of traditional music with many local musicians.

Rhumhor is currently available that weekend so why not gather the family and book a three night break. Enjoy the family festival at Inverary and relax at Rhumhor in stunning surroundings.
